Wind-rated garage doors
The largest opening in most houses, and the one that decides whether the protection you bought for every other opening counts.
Why this page exists
Opening protection is all or nothing
- The largest single opening in the wall, and usually the last one quoted
- One unrated opening can cancel the credit earned by every other
- Rated for wind and tested for impact are two different documents
The wind mitigation credit is not scored opening by opening. Every glazed opening in the house, plus the garage door, has to carry approved protection for the full credit to apply. One unprotected opening can reduce or cancel the credit for everything else — which is how a homeowner ends up having paid for eight impact windows and earning nothing back.
The garage door is where that usually happens, because it is bought from a different trade and quoted on a different day. It is also the largest single opening in the wall: when it fails, the house pressurises from the inside, and that is the failure mode the Florida Building Code was rewritten around after Andrew.
At a glance
Four ways the garage opening gets handled
Only one of these leaves the opening protected with nobody home and nothing to store. The other three are real options, and two of them can still earn the credit — the differences are what you do before a storm and what an inspector can read afterwards.
| Rated doorApproved on its own | Door plus panelTwo products, one opening | Retrofit bracingThe door you already have | Unrated doorWhat most older houses have | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance | One, for the door and its track set | Two — one for the door, one for the panel | One, and only for the doors the kit lists | None |
| Missile impact tested | On the approval, model by model | The panel carries it | The kit carries it | No |
| Protected with nobody home | Yes | Only if the panel is up | Only if the bracing is up | No |
| What you do before a storm | Nothing | Put the panel up, take it down, store it | Put the bracing up, take it down, store it | Nothing that helps |
| Counts toward the mitigation credit | Yes | Yes, with both approvals on file | Yes, on the doors the kit covers | No, and it can cost you the credit on the rest of the house |
| What the inspector reads years later | The label on the door | The label and the panel approval | The kit approval and the door model it was tested with | Nothing |
Bracing is the honest answer when the door is newer than the storm that would test it and its exact model appears on an approved kit — it costs a fraction of a new door and it is documented. It stops being the answer the first time a storm arrives with nobody home to put it up.
What the approval has to say
A garage door is approved as an assembly, not as a panel. These are the lines worth reading on any quote — ours or anybody else’s — before two prices are compared.
- Product approval
- Miami-Dade Notice of Acceptance
- The document that makes the door legal here. It names the model, the sizes it is approved at, and the anchoring detail whoever installs it has to follow.
- Design pressure (DP)
- Positive and negative, on the NOA
- The pressure the assembly is approved to take. Your address and the height of the wall decide the number you need, so a door with a good rating is not the same as a door with the right one.
- Impact rating
- Separate from the wind rating
- Wind load and missile impact are two different tests. A door can pass one and not the other, and the approval is the only place that says which.
- What is approved
- Door, track, brackets and reinforcement
- The rating belongs to the whole assembly. Change the track or leave a strut off and the number on the label stops describing what is on the wall.
- The product label
- Permanent, legible, left on the door
- The wind mitigation inspector reads it years later. A label that has been painted over is an unrated door as far as the credit is concerned.
- The anchoring detail
- Drawn on the approval
- Substrate, spacing and embedment are on the NOA, and following it is what keeps the approval valid — worth confirming with whoever installs the door before it is ordered.
Design pressures belong to a specific model at a specific size and come from its Notice of Acceptance. We give you the ones for your opening with the quote.
What ordering it here changes
One measurement for the whole envelope
The garage opening is measured on the same visit as the windows and the doors, so nothing is quoted off a number somebody read from an old permit.
A design pressure matched to your address, not to a catalogue average
The approval read before the order, so the model quoted is the model that clears the county
Permit paperwork processed with the rest of the job, the same way the windows are
One delivery to coordinate and one number to call when something is wrong
A written quote you can hand to whoever installs it, with the anchoring detail attached
Questions we get about garage doors
Does the garage door really affect the insurance credit?
Yes. Opening protection is all or nothing, and the garage door is the single largest opening in most homes. If it is left unrated, the credit for the windows and doors you did protect can disappear with it.
Is a rated garage door the same as an impact one?
Not automatically. Garage doors are rated for wind load, and in Miami-Dade they need a Notice of Acceptance like anything else in the envelope. Whether a given model is also tested for missile impact is on its approval, and that document is the only place worth checking.
Can I keep the door and reinforce it instead?
Retrofit bracing exists and it is approved for some doors, but it has to be rated, it has to be documented, and somebody has to put it up before every storm. If the credit is part of your maths, a rated door is the version that keeps working when nobody is home.
Does a new garage door need a permit?
In Miami-Dade, yes. A garage door is an opening in the building envelope, so the county wants the approval on file and an inspection against it. We process that permit with the rest of the order — the same paperwork the windows go through.
Can the door be matched to the windows?
Colour and panel profile are chosen from the manufacturer’s range, and it is worth choosing them beside the window frames rather than months after. On most single-storey houses the garage door is the largest flat surface on the front elevation, so it sets the colour everything else is read against.
Quote the garage door with the rest of the envelope
It is the opening most likely to be left out, and the one most likely to cost you the credit.
